Avocado is a hybrid mattress made for health-conscious people that want a more responsive feeling mattress with moderate bounce and good firm support.

The Avocado mattress has a lot going for it when it comes to being eco-friendly, clean and green but how does it rate when it comes to comfort and sleep experience in general?

Here is what we think of the Avocado Green Mattress.

What is the Construction?

Avocado may be marketed as a green mattress, but it is also a true Hybrid at heart. The mattress is constructed with a Dunlop latex top and a pocked coil system at the bottom.

Organic Cotton Cover

The avocado mattress’s cover is a button tufted organic cotton that looks and feels good. Natural cotton is one of the most breathable and soft fabrics you can find and best of all, it’s been used by humans for hundreds of years so our bodies have gotten used to it and having any allergic reactions to it is extremely rare.

Natural Wool Fire barrier

Like most natural and eco-friendly mattresses, the Avocado mattress takes a healthier approach when it comes to their fire barrier by using organic wool instead of harmful chemicals.

Organic Dunlop Latex

Avocado uses organic certified Dunlop latex as its main comfort layer. There a 2-inch Dunlop latex right under the cover and it does a good job at both support and comfort. Keep in mind that if you feel like 2-inches of Dunlop latex might feel too firm for you then you do have the choice to add the pillowtop which is another 2-inches of Dunlop latex. Also, the same Dunlop latex is used under the mattress to increase its durability.

Quantum Edge® Elite Combi-Zone Coil System

This pocketed coil system used in the Avocado mattress is one of the best found in any hybrid mattress. Made by Leggett and Platt, this coil system can be very supportive and responsive. It gives individual support while at the same time it reduces motion transfer a lot in comparison to other coil beds.

Overall, the Avocado mattress construction is one of the better hybrid builds we’ve seen.

How Is the Support and Comfort?

Because the Avocado mattress uses Dunlop latex and pocketed coils, the mattress has an immediate response time with limited sink in. Back sleepers and stomach sleepers will find the right amount of support they were looking for because the Avocado is designed with a 5-zone support system that accommodates the different parts of the body differently.

Side sleepers, however, are better off getting the Avocado mattress with the pillowtop as it will provide the pressure relief and sink in, they need.

If lightweight people get the Avocado in the base model without the topper then it might feel a little too firm for them. What we recommend is that if you are used to softer mattress then we certainly recommend getting the topper with the mattress. Remember that you can always get the topper later since both mattress and topper have free delivery and returns.

Does This Mattress Sleep Cool?

Yes, very much so in fact. Any mattress that uses coils usually sleeps cooler than most beds and any mattress that uses latex also sleeps cooler than most beds. Well, in this case, the Avocado mattress uses both.

Avocado is a hybrid mattress that uses latex on top. This means that what little heat the latex traps will get dissipated by the coils system since it has a lot of empty space.

How Is the Edge Support?

Almost all bed in a box mattresses have mediocre edge support but the Avocado mattress has the edge support coils system that increases the edge support noticeably. Sitting on the very edge might still not feel as supportive as sitting on the edge of a traditional mattress with a 3-inch foam encasement but it gets the job done.

Also, note that the avocado mattress creators are green and natural conscious and so they decided not to use foam encasement to reduce the use of polyfoams or eliminate it altogether.

Is There Motion Transfer?

Though there is motion transfer, it’s barely noticeable. Like all coil mattresses, the motion between partners can be noticed but the latex and the pocketed coil in the Avocado do well to reduce it to an acceptable limit.

We noticed that if one partner leaves the bed, the other one will barely notice any movement and certainly not enough to wake an average sleeper.

Overall, Avocado offers a good and fairly quiet sleep experience for couples.

Is This Mattress Good for Sex?

Yes, the Avocado is ideal for lovemaking and here is why. There are several requirements for a bed to be good for sex. It needs to be sturdy, responsive and bouncy, and also comfortable and easy to move on. The avocado mattress has all of these features making it one of the best mattresses for active couples.

Though most coils beds are good for sex, they lack the needed durability to make them good for the long-term. The Avocado mattress, on the other hand, is good while also sturdy.

How Firm Is It?

Like we said earlier, the Avocado mattress comes with and without topper and the firmness is very different between the two.

Without topper. If you get the mattress the regular way which is without topper then the firmness according to what we think is a 7.5 out of 10 or a medium-firm. That is because Avocado uses a medium latex with a coil system making it somewhat firmer than a regular latex bed. The Avocado bed without the topper is more suited for back and stomach sleepers that are average and heavyweight.

With topper. If you add the 2-inch topper to your mattress then it will be a 5.5 out of 10 or a medium. The Avocado mattress with the topper is better suited for lightweight people and side sleepers in general.

How Durable Is This Mattress?

In any construction, your build is only as strong as your weaker part. For mattresses that is certainly true as the whole mattress can sag from a single weaker layer.

Thankfully the Avocado mattress has no weaker link. You start from the durable cotton and wool cover then the 2-inch Dunlop latex then the 8-inch pocketed coil system and all are very sturdy.

This means that the mattress will last a long time if cared for since hybrids are delicate mattresses. For example, not using a mattress protector will cause dust mites to inhabit the pocked coil part of the mattress and shortly after causing the coil to rust, weaken and sag.

It is very important to protect your hybrid mattress; more so than a regular latex mattress to ensure its longevity.

Where Is It Made?

The Avocado mattress is handmade in Los Angeles California. This is good for a couple of reasons. First American quality is usually better than imported beds.

And second, the mattress might take a few days longer than an imported mattress to be delivered but it is made fresh for you and so it cannot go out of stock.

Does It Have Any Unpleasant Smell?

Avocado only has the smell of a new latex mattress which is very normal and safe. It has many green certifications that prove that the smell released is not harmful at all.

When we first opened our Avocado mattress with the pillowtop we did notice a very miner latex smell that dissipated quickly and with no issues.

Overall the Avocado mattress rates very high in off-gassing.

Is This Mattress Worth It for the Money?

The Avocado mattress is like a package of goodies in one fair price. The materials that this bed uses well justifies the asked priced. If you were to go look for a hybrid latex locally, you’ll most likely see prices that are 30% more at least.

For organic latex, cotton, and wool along with a very advanced pocketed coil unit the Avocado is well worth its price tag.

Trial Period and Refunds

The Avocado mattress has a 1-year trial that is longer than most bed in a box companies. Though 1-year is longer than what you need, it is still nice to have the option and complete peace of mind for a whole year after delivery.

Warranty

The Avocado mattress has a 25-year warranty that offers the first 10-years as full coverage meaning you will not pay anything if the mattress defects. After that for the years 11-25, the warranty is pro-rated meaning, you’ll pay part of the mattress value.

Like most hybrid warranties the Avocado cover a 1-inch body indentation that is caused by the common use of sleeping and not customer abuse.
